Discover Campania with us
Among the Italian regions more rich in art, history, natural beauty, we must certainly include the Campania. The waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea wash the region on the west, and the fervent volcanic activity makes fertile its lands, it’s for that reason that Campania was called "Campania felix". And Campania "felix is" both from the naturalistic point of view and from the point of view of arts and culture.
With a hilly territory, a vast plain in the hinterland ofNaples and the presence of several mountainous areas in the inner part of its territory, Campania has rather varied landscapes. Its lands create gourmet products unique in the world, such as cherry tomatoes and mozzarella, giving rise to one of the most eaten foods all over the world: pizza. Naples and the Campania represent the country of pizza.
Its islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida are real jewels, beautiful tourist destinations and popular beach resorts. Equally enchanting resorts of Sorrento, the Amalfi coast and Cilento, which in addition to Sorrento and Amalfi, offer destinations such as Positano, Ravello and Maiori. The Greeks immediately realized the prosperity of Campania, and in Campania they founded several colonies such as Cumae, Paestum and Naples (Greeks called it first Parthenope and then Neapolis).
The Romans created the "Regio I Campania", giving impetus to the growth of Pompeii, Capua and Nola’s centres. The Romans appreciated also its thermal waters and its beach resorts, as evidenced by the remains of several spas and the numerous Roman villas (also present on the island of Capri). In more recent times the Anjou and Bourbon dominations have made of Naples and of all the region of one of the richest centre and one of the most flourishing kingdoms of Europe.
The works of art and cultural heritage left by each of these civilizations, today make the Campania a center of great archaeological, artistic and historical interest.
There are many excursions and tours to do in Campania. In Naples it is worth spending even more days between museums and churches of the city. We especially recommend a visit to the Capodimonte Museum, the archaeological Museum and the cathedral of Naples, the Basilica of Santa Chiara and San Severo Chapel. For a scenic route you must go and see the hill of Posillipo. From the top you can admire a beautiful postcard of the city:the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the background, it’s a unique show.
At the foot of Vesuvius, the ruins of Pompeii and its excavations are one of the most visited spots, tourists come from all over the world. Life seems to have stopped in 79d.C. year in which the eruption of Vesuvius covered the entire city with ash and lava. The same was for Herculaneum, where recent excavations have brought to light a real Roman city with its public spaces, its streets, its shops and its homes. In Paestum, south of Salerno it is possible to visit the temples of Neptune and Athena; Do not miss the Archaeological Museum where you can admire the famous "Diver's Tomb".
Popular locations all over the world are Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi.
Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast are international destinations, particularly suitable for lovers of sun, sea and sophisticated life style.
The island of Capri is particular for its worldliness. The square(Piazza Umberto I )and its nightclubs are in the heart of the island night life ; Villa Jovis and Villa San Michele make its history very fascinating ; “faraglioni” and “grotta azzurra” (blue cave) make it one of the most beautiful resorts in the world.
Also important is the island of Ischia, which differs from Capri for the presence of volcanic activity and hot springs. And it is in the basement that Ischia hides his greatest treasure. With about 103 sources, each with a different chemical composition and different therapeutic properties, the island is one of the main Italian thermal resorts. But Ischia is not only spa, it is also sea, beach, shopping, trekking and worldliness.
Less publicized and therefore less known, is theisland of Procida, an island of women, sailors and fishermen, less devoted to tourism compared to Ischia and Capri, and this seems to preserve its traditions and its folklore. A famous example of this is the procession of the Mysteries, which accompanies every Good Friday the statue of the dead Christ.
These and more is what Campania has to offer, without considering a wide program of events that the region and the local societies organize for the whole year: social events in summer (with several film festivals and performances), and cultural and gastronomic events in winter.
